Towards an understanding of hole superconductivity
From the very beginning K. Alex M\"uller emphasized that the materials he and
George Bednorz discovered in 1986 were superconductors. Here I would
like to share with him and others what I believe to be key reason for why
high cuprates as well as all other superconductors are hole
superconductors, which I only came to understand a few months ago. This paper

Angiotensin II receptor blockade alleviates calcineurin inhibitor nephrotoxicity by restoring cyclooxygenase 2 expression in kidney cortex
Aim: The use of calcineurin inhibitors such as cyclosporine A (CsA) for immunosuppression after solid organ transplantation is commonly limited by renal side effects. CsA-induced deterioration of glomerular filtration rate and sodium retention may be related to juxtaglomerular dysregulation as a result of suppressed cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and stimulated renin biosynthesis. We tested whether CsA-induced COX-2 suppression is caused by hyperactive renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and whether RAS inhibition may alleviate the related side effects. Methods: Rats received CsA, the RAS inhibitor candesartan, or the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib acutely (3 days) or chronically (3 weeks). Molecular pathways mediating effects of CsA and RAS on COX-2 were studied in cultured macula densa cells. Results: Pharmacological or siRNA-mediated calcineurin inhibition in cultured cells enhanced COX-2 expression via p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and NF-kB signalling, whereas angiotensin II abolished these effects. Acute and chronic CsA administration to rats led to RAS activation along with reduced cortical COX-2 expression, creatinine clearance and fractional sodium excretion. Evaluation of major distal salt transporters, NKCC2 and NCC, showed increased levels of their activating phosphorylation upon CsA. Concomitant candesartan treatment blunted these effects acutely and completely normalized the COX-2 expression and renal functional parameters at long term. Celecoxib prevented the candesartan-induced improvements of creatinine clearance and sodium excretion. Conclusion: Suppression of juxtaglomerular COX-2 upon CsA results from RAS activation, which overrides the cell-autonomous, COX-2-stimulatory effects of calcineurin inhibition. Angiotensin II antagonism alleviates CsA nephrotoxicity via the COX-2-dependent normalization of creatinine clearance and sodium excretion
Long-term field performance of a polyester-based long-lasting insecticidal mosquito net in rural Uganda
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In order to evaluate whether criteria for LLIN field performance (phase III) set by the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme are met, first and second generations of one of these products, PermaNet<sup>®</sup>, a polyester net using the coating technology were tested.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A randomized, double blinded study design was used comparing LLIN to conventionally treated nets and following LLIN for three years under regular household use in rural conditions. Primary outcome measures were deltamethrin residue and bioassay performance (60 minute knock-down and 24 hour mortality after a three minute exposure) using a strain of <it>Anopheles gambiae s.s</it>. sensitive to pyrethroid insecticides.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Baseline concentration of deltamethrin was within targets for all net types but was rapidly lost in conventionally treated nets and first generation PermaNet<sup>® </sup>with median of 0.7 and 2.5 mg/m<sup>2 </sup>after six months respectively. In contrast, second generation PermaNet<sup>® </sup>retained insecticide well and had 41.5% of baseline dose after 36 months (28.7 mg/m<sup>2</sup>). Similarly, vector mortality and knockdown dropped to 18% and 70% respectively for first generation LLIN after six months but remained high (88.5% and 97.8% respectively) for second generation PermaNet<sup>® </sup>after 36 months of follow up at which time 90.0% of nets had either a knockdown rate ≥ 95% or mortality rate ≥ 80%.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Second generation PermaNet<sup>® </sup>showed excellent results after three years of field use and fulfilled the WHOPES criteria for LLIN. Loss of insecticide on LLIN using coating technology under field conditions was far more influenced by factors associated with handling rather than washing.</p
Why Some Interfaces Cannot be Sharp
A central goal of modern materials physics and nanoscience is control of
materials and their interfaces to atomic dimensions. For interfaces between
polar and non-polar layers, this goal is thwarted by a polar catastrophe that
forces an interfacial reconstruction. In traditional semiconductors this
reconstruction is achieved by an atomic disordering and stoichiometry change at
the interface, but in multivalent oxides a new option is available: if the
electrons can move, the atoms don`t have to. Using atomic-scale electron energy
loss spectroscopy we find that there is a fundamental asymmetry between
ionically and electronically compensated interfaces, both in interfacial
sharpness and carrier density. This suggests a general strategy to design sharp
interfaces, remove interfacial screening charges, control the band offset, and
hence dramatically improving the performance of oxide devices.Comment: 12 pages of text, 6 figure

The nature of NV absorbers at high redshift
We present a study of NV absorption systems at 1.5 < z < 2.5 in the optical
spectra of 19 QSOs. Our analysis includes both absorbers arising from the
intergalactic medium as well as systems in the vicinity of the background
quasar. We construct detailed photoionization models to study the physical
conditions and abundances in the absorbers and to constrain the spectral
hardness of the ionizing radiation. The rate of incidence for intervening NV
components is dN/dz = 3.38 +/- 0.43, corresponding to dN/dX = 1.10 +/- 0.14.
The column density distribution function is fitted by the slope beta = 1.89 +/-
0.22, consistent with measurements for CIV and OVI. The narrow line widths
(b_NV ~ 6 km/s) imply photoionization rather than collisions as dominating
ionization process. The column densities of CIV and NV are correlated but show
different slopes for intervening and associated absorbers, which indicates
different ionizing spectra. Associated systems are found to be more metal-rich,
denser, and more compact than intervening absorbers. This conclusion is
independent of the adopted ionizing radiation. For the intervening NV systems
we find typical values of [C/H] ~ -0.6 and n_H ~ 10^-3.6 cm^-3, and sizes of a
few kpc, while for associated NV absorbers we obtain [C/H] ~ +0.7, n_H ~
10^-2.8 cm^-3, and sizes of several 10 pc. The abundance of nitrogen relative
to carbon [N/C] and alpha-elements like oxygen and silicon [N/alpha] is
correlated with [N/H], indicating the enrichment by secondary nitrogen. The
larger scatter in [N/alpha] in intervening systems suggests an inhomogeneous
enrichment of the IGM. There is an anti-correlation between [N/alpha] and
[alpha/C], which could be used to constrain the initial mass function of the
carbon- and nitrogen-producing stellar population.Comment: accepted by A&A, revised versio
Topological semimetal in a fermionic optical lattice
Optical lattices play a versatile role in advancing our understanding of
correlated quantum matter. The recent implementation of orbital degrees of
freedom in chequerboard and hexagonal optical lattices opens up a new thrust
towards discovering novel quantum states of matter, which have no prior analogs
in solid state electronic materials. Here, we demonstrate that an exotic
topological semimetal emerges as a parity-protected gapless state in the
orbital bands of a two-dimensional fermionic optical lattice. The new quantum
state is characterized by a parabolic band-degeneracy point with Berry flux
, in sharp contrast to the flux of Dirac points as in graphene. We
prove that the appearance of this topological liquid is universal for all
lattices with D point group symmetry as long as orbitals with opposite
parities hybridize strongly with each other and the band degeneracy is
protected by odd parity. Turning on inter-particle repulsive interactions, the
system undergoes a phase transition to a topological insulator whose
experimental signature includes chiral gapless domain-wall modes, reminiscent

Acute embolic occlusion of the common iliac artery is a rare medical emergency that is not only limb-threatening, but also potentially life-threatening. Several treatment options exist for acute limb ischemia, although no treatment is clearly best. We report a case of acute embolic occlusion of the left common iliac artery in a patient with atrial fibrillation who was treated successfully using mechanical thrombectomy following intra-arterial thrombolysis

Airborne measurements of western U.S. wildfire emissions: Comparison with prescribed burning and air quality implications
Wildfires emit significant amounts of pollutants that degrade air quality. Plumes from three wildfires in the western U.S. were measured from aircraft during the Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) and the Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP), both in summer 2013. This study reports an extensive set of emission factors (EFs) for over 80 gases and 5 components of submicron particulate matter (PM1) from these temperate wildfires. These include rarely, or never before, measured oxygenated volatile organic compounds and multifunctional organic nitrates. The observed EFs are compared with previous measurements of temperate wildfires, boreal forest fires, and temperate prescribed fires. The wildfires emitted high amounts of PM1 (with organic aerosol (OA) dominating the mass) with an average EF that is more than 2 times the EFs for prescribed fires. The measured EFs were used to estimate the annual wildfire emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, total nonmethane organic compounds, and PM1 from 11 western U.S. states. The estimated gas emissions are generally comparable with the 2011 National Emissions Inventory (NEI). However, our PM1 emission estimate (1530 ± 570 Gg yr-1) is over 3 times that of the NEI PM2.5 estimate and is also higher thanthe PM2.5 emitted from all other sources in these states in the NEI. This study indicates that the source of OA from biomass burning in the western states is significantly underestimated. In addition, our results indicate that prescribed burning may be an effective method to reduce fine particle emissions
A hypothetico-deductive approach to assessing the social function of chemical signalling in a non-territorial solitary carnivore
The function of chemical signalling in non-territorial solitary carnivores is still relatively unclear. Studies on territorial solitary and social carnivores have highlighted odour capability and utility, however the social function of chemical signalling in wild carnivore populations operating dominance hierarchy social systems has received little attention. We monitored scent marking and investigatory behaviour of wild brown bears Ursus arctos, to test multiple hypotheses relating to the social function of chemical signalling. Camera traps were stationed facing bear ‘marking trees’ to document behaviour by different age sex classes in different seasons. We found evidence to support the hypothesis that adult males utilise chemical signalling to communicate dominance to other males throughout the non-denning period. Adult females did not appear to utilise marking trees to advertise oestrous state during the breeding season. The function of marking by subadult bears is somewhat unclear, but may be related to the behaviour of adult males. Subadults investigated trees more often than they scent marked during the breeding season, which could be a result of an increased risk from adult males. Females with young showed an increase in marking and investigation of trees outside of the breeding season. We propose the hypothesis that females engage their dependent young with marking trees from a young age, at a relatively ‘safe’ time of year. Memory, experience, and learning at a young age, may all contribute towards odour capabilities in adult bears
